One of the most beautiful lakes you are likely to find anywhere in the world is Lake Atitlan, a remote, deep-water lake in Guatemala that is surrounded by volcanoes and colorful small villages. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Guatemala, don’t miss this special place.
I was visiting the beautiful tiled steps of San Francisco’s 16th Avenue one day when a family that was either about to attend a wedding or just returning from one appeared. In a flash, their daughter, dressed in a fabulous pink dress, raced up the stairs squealing with glee. I was only able to get one shot off before the moment passed. It’s one of my favorite photos.

Robert Louis Stevenson State Park
I just returned from a short visit to Calistoga. Just north of town, on a rainy spring day, the Robert Louis Stevenson state park is nothing short of magical.
Zulu’s Stare
There’s no feline more beautifully exotic than an Abyssinian. They are smarter, more playful and demanding of your attention than any other breed. If you’re ever lucky enough to be owned by an Abby, your life will be richer for it.
Mt. Diablo Burns
In northern California, fire is nature’s preferred method of renewing itself. Like clockwork, September is fire season and this year is no exception. This year it hit close to home. Here’s the view from my house — both last night and this morning — of Mt. Diablo burning just across the San Francisco Bay.
Evening view from San Francisco’s Cliff House
One of my favorite places to take out-of-town visitors to dinner is Sutro’s at the Cliff House. Yes, the food is great. But with the restaurant perched atop the cliffs overlooking San Francisco’s Ocean Beach, the views and sunsets are unforgettable. Last night was no exception.
Watching America’s Cup races on the San Francisco Bay
This week I had an opportunity to go out onto San Francisco’s bay to watch from up-close the America’s Cup Louis Vuitton Cup finals. The Louis Vuitton Cup finals are a competition to determine which boat will sail against the defending champion Oracle USA team for the 2013 America’s Cup. This finals competition is between Italy’s Luna Rossa and the Emirates New Zealand teams. New Zealand is the clear winner with a substantially faster boat. But watching these works of art and technological prowess race across the beautiful San Francisco Bay is breathtaking.
